systems infrastructure from the field

about

I'm Garrett Everding, CTO at Rave, the app that lets people watch videos together and chat. I've spent the better part of a decade making sure millions of people can argue about what to watch next without the infrastructure falling over. I started at Rave in 2015 while writing my final exams at the University of Waterloo, because paying attention in class was never really my thing. Somehow I still graduated from Computer Engineering and eventually became CTO, which just goes to show that stubbornness beats GPA.

These days I work extensively with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, running high-scale systems with aggressive cost discipline, and I maintain an open-source Rust SDK for OCI because apparently I hate free time.

I'm also legally blind, which you'd think would be a problem for someone who stares at infrastructure diagrams all day, but honestly most outages are caused by humans who can see perfectly fine.

When I'm not wrangling cloud infrastructure, you can find me hiking, spending time with my family and dogs, or at the range.
